What a strange title for a blog post! Maybe… Or maybe it’s what you need to hear. It’s not about hammers, it’s about the mindset you have to grow.
Having the right tools for the job
It’s a bit ridiculous to think of someone painting with a hammer, but I see the wrong tools (or tactics) being used ALL of the time.
It’s important to obtain the right tools, the right information, the proper training and the ideal mindset to have the be opportunity for success.
There’s a quick “cheat sheet” to follow, all you need to do is keep reading.
Have pride in your work
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What am I trying to accomplish? An obvious question you might say, but it’s really not. Humans are constantly “spinning their wheels” with no goal.
- How long do I want to spend on this task? Performing a task with no time limit is outrageous; though occasionally it’s necessary.
- Do I want to do a good job, or a bad job? Another obvious one… We all should WANT to do a good job, but it’s not always the case.
- Do I care what other people think of my work? This depends on YOU, but personally it’s not always a factor, unless it’s the customer’s opinion.
- Am I being efficient? Back to the hammer. Are you making efficient use of the resources around you?
Find the right “work”
It’s all too common to find older generations of people doing things (for a living) that don’t serve them.
You have encountered someone who has been in the wrong career for too long, and they’ve fallen into bitterness or complacency.
Working with people who are spiritually dead is not enjoyable for anybody. Everyone can see it, and I don’t want that for you.
Finding what “lights up your soul” is life’s greatest adventure, and some people won’t even get there.
It’s okay if you search your entire life for your passion, but don’t find it until you’re older, time is relative.
Someone who finds their passion in their 60s, will have the rest of their life to enjoy it. That’s better than never finding it at all.
Be deliberate
In a world of anxiety, and depression, it seems to be more ideal to have no aspirations, no goals, no vision.
Why is that ideal?
Ignorance is bliss; and bliss is where we all want to live.
By not having goals, there is no room to fail. Because failure makes people feel like they’re not enough.
Living a life with no goals to avoid failure is not a life. You’re capable of doing so much more than you are doing right now.
Get serious today!
Make a list of (realistic) goals that you want to achieve, and make sure to check in with yourself every week to get back on track and move toward those goals.
Read. Learn. Grow.
If there’s one piece of advice I can give to anyone who feels lost, or unsure in the world, it’s picking up a good book.
I’m not talking about Harry Potter – though, it’s always a solid choice.
I’m talking about personal development, and self improvement. Learn from people who have experienced life, and who want to share their wisdom.
People who inspire me are military/ex-military, philosophers, CEOs, psychiatrists, successful entrepreneurs, and philanthropists who are interested in bettering those around them.
I’ll recommend a list of books below, and you should invest in yourself by picking one up.

The BEST version of yourself.
The one that doesn’t try to paint with a hammer. Use the resources you have to do better.
